Henry Alford (1810-1871) served several British Anglican parishes as priest, before becoming Dean of Canterbury. He wrote poetry and hymns, and also translated works from Greek.
His words are partnered with a tune from George Job Elvey (1816-1893). He was a chorister of Canterbury Cathedral and New College, Oxford, before studying music at the Royal Academy. He served as organist of St George's Chapel, Windsor, for 47 years.
